Project Goal & Objectives
Project Goal:
To optimize the HIV case identification to meet the 1st 95% and protect uninfected persons, and improve linkage to care, retention and VL monitoring of HIV-infected persons to achieve the 2nd and 3rd 95%.
Project Objectives:
- To deliver comprehensive integrated, differentiated, and equitable high-quality people-centered HIV care and generate evidence-based interventions on active case finding and continuity of care at COEs in five referral hospitals and prototype facilities in Malawi
- To strengthen site and community-level monitoring and reporting systems
Scope of Work
SEJ project is being implemented to optimise HIV case identification using a facility-based approach in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Zomba. The project supports HIV testing services in five HIV Management Centres of Excellence (COEs) including:
- Bwaila Martin Preuss Centre
- Kamuzu Central Hospital-Lighthouse
- Zomba Tisungane Clinic
- Mzuzu Central Hospital Rainbow Clinic
- Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Umodzi Family Centre
Additionally, the project supports eight prototype facilities in Lilongwe (Kawale, Area 18, Nathenje, Chitedze, Chileka, Lumbadzi, Mitundu Community Hospital and Kamuzu Central Hospital) as well as two prisons (Maula and Kachere).
Through the provision of targeted interventions such as provider-initiated testing (PITC), Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT), Index testing and Social Network Testing, the project focuses on reaching:
- Men
- Women
- Children
- Adolescents
- Adolescent girls and young women
- Orphans and Vulnerable children
- Key populations (including prisoners)
Since November 2022, the project has conducted HIV tests on 687,497 clients, identifying 15,719 positive cases and linking them to lifelong care and treatment.

Project Description
The SEJ project implements facility-based HIV testing services in Centers of Excellence and prototype facilities across Malawi. The project focuses on optimizing HIV case identification and improving linkage to care through various testing approaches.
MACRO provides oversight to ensure that the project is implemented according to protocols and achieves its goals of identifying HIV cases and linking them to care.
